One Book Shy of a Full Shelf
Welcome to One Book Shy of a Full Shelf’s Review Policy page. It is here that you’ll learn more about my procedures for reviewing books. If you’d like to learn more about the person behind the scenes, check out my ABOUT ME page.
What I Like
This review policy is not an absolute. Instead, think of it as like the Pirate Code – it’s more of a guideline.
For the most part, I will read just about anything that sparks an interest with me. Books that might fuel a lively discussion are also welcome. I do admit to leaning towards certain genres. If I had to pick just one it would easily be historical fiction. My admiration knows no bounds for authors who can take history and make it come alive with their characters – real or imagined.
Other genres that I do regularly read and review include:
- Romance (especially historical)
- Fantasy / Paranormal / Science Fiction
- Young Adult YA
- Women’s Fiction / Chick Lit
- Green Living / Prepping / Homesteading / Survivalism
- Gardening / Farming / Pets / Animals
For the most part, I don’t review a whole lot of true crime, politics and most biographies. BUT, I do make exceptions! Tom Clancy and Dan Brown are two of my favorite authors even though they don’t fit the above list.
I also tend to be an old traditionalist for the most part. I LOVE books – physical books that is. My collection/library is almost obnoxious. If it is a choice between a physical copy or an ebook, I always prefer the one I can feel, smell and turn the pages myself. That doesn’t mean that I don’t embrace the digital age. I have my lovely e-reader or phone always with me.
Things to Remember
Don’t be afraid to contact me if you have something that you think may fit my style or interest. I welcome all requests for reviews and may be contacted at either of the emails listed below or via the CONTACT FORM.
Another thing to keep in mind is that I have several other blogs that I may do book reviews on at times. Your book may fit one of them:
Red Barn Blue Skies – …a little about a lot of things and a lot about the little things that color our world…
Biddy Banter – where the chickens go to chatter
Halloweenistic – Halloween: Every Day, All Year Long
Centsable Couponing – Using common sense to shop smart for extreme savings
The Cowgirl Writes – my freelancer-for-hire site coming soon
Please don’t be offended if I choose not to do a review on your book. Time is a major factor in my decisions on which books I feature. My reading time is very limited and I try to choose those books that are the best match for me and my readers. Keep in mind that just because I didn’t decide to read this book, your next one might be a fit. Be sure to keep me on your mailing list.
Let’s Get Started
Part of the enjoyment I get from this book review blog is the chance to interact with authors and readers. It is a lot of fun for me to conduct author interviews or to host guest posts from spotlighted authors. It gives me and the followers a chance to meet the wielder of the mighty pen.
Another way to garner more attention to your book is to sponsor a giveaway for One Book Shy’s readers. I’ve noticed a much higher level of interest when the review, interview or guest post is accompanied by a giveaway.
Using photos always brightens up a book review. I usually require at least a cover photo and like to add author photos and bios when available. If you have other graphics that will add value and appeal to the post, by all means, send them to me for inclusion.
I like to be able to take my time to enjoy a book and not be rushed into a review. It is possible that it may take me several weeks or longer once I’ve received my copy to write and post a review. Unless we have prearranged a posting date or the review is part of a blog tour, your patience will be required.
Unless it is that from a by-lined guest reviewer, I don’t post reviews of books that I haven’t personally read. Along this line, I do not guarantee a review of every book. I do my best to read everything I receive, but I am human and some books just won’t resonate with me. As I noted above, time is also a consideration. This is one of the reasons I try to be choosy about what I accept.
Negative or Non-Reviews
My reviews are completely my own opinions and in my own words. I prefer to focus on aspects of a book that I enjoy or got a lot out of. I don’t like to make negative remarks or post unflattering reviews. However, I do write honest reviews. If something is off for me in a book, I will remark upon it and explain my feelings.
**If I am having a hard time getting into a book or just can’t find positives about it, I reserve the right to discontinue reading it and/or not posting a review. I also reserve the right to forward a physical book to one of my blogging friends who may be a better fit for your particular book.
Affiliates and Money Issues
I receive no money for posting my book reviews. Books are usually furnished to me by the author, agent or publisher. *The source will be noted in each review post. I use affiliate links in all of my posts and on each of my sites. These include links for readers to purchase the books as well as related items. Every bit is appreciated as I receive no money for reading and reviewing any of these books.
Affiliate links allow me to receive a very small percentage of any items a reader purchases after following one of my links. This extremely small amount of money helps to pay for the monthly and yearly expenses of keeping this website operational. This includes hosting fees as well as the cost of books and items for giveaways that I sponsor.
I retain all rights to what I have written on my blog. I have no problem with my reviews or comments being used elsewhere – as long as there are links back to my blog. I must be notified that the content is being used elsewhere.
I hope you’ll take the time to get to know a little bit about me and my writing style. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions about our review policy or if you’d like to see if your book is a fit here at One Book Shy of a Full Shelf. I look forward to discussing with you the next good book.
